Bombing kills 13 in Philippines Last Updated Sat, 10 May 2003 12:22:11 KORONDAL CITY, PHILIPPINES - Thirteen people died and another 26 were injured when a bomb went off at a crowded market in the southern Philippines Saturday.
The number of casualties in Korondal City could have been much higher; a second bomb was found about 100 metres away from the first. Police were able to defuse it.
Suspicion immediately fell on the militant Islamic separatist group called the Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF).
But officials say the Muslim extremist Abu Sayyaf group has claimed responsibility.
Officials said an initial investigation found the bomb was fashioned from an 81-millimetre mortar shell. The Philippines military has said the MILF is known to make such mortar bombs.
The bombing came amid faltering peace talks between the rebel group and the government. An MILF spokesman denied responsibility for the attack, saying the group does not target civilians.
Korondal City, the capital of Cotabato province, is about 960 kilometres south of the Philippines capital of Manila.
The market was the scene of a similar bombing last month in which two died. That attack was also blamed on the MILF. Thirty-eight other people were killed in two other bomb blasts in the Philippines in March and April.
