US suspects ISI aiding Taliban insurgents in Afghanistan

Washington, Oct. 7 (PTI): The United States suspects that agents of Pakistan's ISI are aiding the Taliban insurgency against the Karzai Government in Afghanistan. The insurgents in Afghanistan, said the Washington Times, are increasingly turning to drug money to buy weapons, prompting the Pentagon to beef up counter narcotics operations.

According to US military intelligence sources, convoys regularly move into Southern Afghanistan from Pakistan, dropping off guns for the Taliban in exchange for opium from the world's largest poppy harvest. The paper quoting the sources said the ISI is aiding the Talibans.

The drug money is financing a four-month-old offensive, one of the largest since the U.S., with the help of the Northern Alliance, ousted the Taliban from power 22 months ago. U.S. analysts told the paper that they believe the new drive is directed by the reclusive Mullah Omar, the ousted Taliban leader, who has evaded an intensive U.S. manhunt, as has his comrade in arms, Al Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden.

Local Afghans told the paper that Omar hides in the mountains north and northeast of Kandahar, his one-time base. Omar has directed the recruitment and staging of fresh Taliban troops for re-entry into Afghanistan in and around Chaman. "We don't have lots of pictures of him," said an intelligence officer, adding "he could walk right past me in a village and I would not know it".

The Bush administration has asked Congress for 73 million dollars to fight Afghan drug traffickers.
