Family Counts Cost of U.S. Food Aid 'Bomb'

Updated: Tue, Nov 20 8:49 AM EST

HERAT, Afghanistan (Reuters) - In the early hours of Tuesday, unemployed Afghan engineer Golam Sediq was woken up by a loud bang -- a crate full of U.S. food aid fell through his roof.

With seven people, mostly women and children, asleep in the house, it was pure luck that no one was hurt, though his two-year-old son was trapped under the rubble for some time.

"Around three o'clock in the morning we heard the sound of planes and then suddenly there was a loud crash," said Sediq as he surveyed the damage to his simple mud-brick home in this northwestern city near the border with Iran.

Three other houses in the run-down, dusty Herat slum also displayed large holes in their roofs, broken windows and shattered furniture. Again, no one was injured.

Yellow food packages, labeled "a gift from the people of the United States of America," packets of peanut butter and poptarts littered nearby gardens.

"They should drop smaller packages or nothing at all," said Sediq. "We'll have to pay at least 20 times more to repair the damage than we gain from the extra food. The Americans should pay for this."

Many of the packages split apart on impact and most had not been touched. Muslims fasting during the holy month of Ramadan are not supposed to eat until sunset. Even then, some were not so sure about the unfamiliar foodstuffs.

"We'll do a test and feed it to the chickens first and then see if we can eat it," said neighbor Soltan Sabzevari.
