Israeli Raid in Gaza Kills 5 Palestinians
Incursion Prompted by Rocket Attacks on Nearby Communities, Officials Say

JERUSALEM, May 15 -- Israeli troops invaded a patch of the northern Gaza Strip early today, killing five people, including three youths, during an operation aimed at stopping Palestinian fighters from using the area to fire rockets into Israel, Palestinian and Israeli officials said.

Palestinian witnesses and security sources said the raid into Beit Hanoun, in the northeastern corner of the Gaza Strip, began about 3 a.m. More than 60 armored vehicles, including tanks, jeeps and armored personnel carriers, took up positions in and around the town, which in recent months has become a frequently used site for launching crude, homemade rockets at nearby Israeli communities.

Soldiers destroyed at least four houses that allegedly belonged to Palestinian militants involved in producing and firing the rockets, army officials said, and they destroyed several acres of nearby farmland that the militants had used to shield their launching pads.

The stepped-up Israeli military campaign, in response to Palestinian rocket and mortar fire at Israeli settlements, army posts and towns in Gaza and just outside the territory, comes during a flurry of activity to get the two sides to declare a cease-fire and resume peace talks.

Secretary of State Colin L. Powell visited the region this week to kick off a new peace initiative, called the "road map," and Israel's prime minister, Ariel Sharon, and the new Palestinian prime minister, Mahmoud Abbas, are expected to have their first face-to-face meeting Saturday night. Sharon leaves Sunday for Washington, where he will meet with President Bush and senior administration officials to discuss the road map, which Bush has promised to make a centerpiece of U.S. Middle East policy.

Maj. Gen. Doron Almog, chief of the Israeli army's Southern Command, which includes the Gaza Strip, said at a briefing in Tel Aviv that the operation in Beit Hanoun would continue for "several days."

Three Palestinian youths were killed in the operation, according to Palestinian security and hospital officials: Mohammed Zaanin, 12, was shot in the head while throwing stones at Israeli troops; Zuhair Abu Garad, 15, was shot in the head and back while walking in a field outside Beit Hanoun; and a third youth, Abdul Qader Abu Qaas, 16, also was shot.

Two militants from the Popular Resistance Committees, a small organization formed by former members of other radical groups, were also killed. A statement by the group identified them as Nedal Ikrayyem, 22, and Khalil Karmot, 35. Hospital officials said at least 20 Palestinians were injured.
