Two Palestinian Groups Claim Tel Aviv Bombing Wed April 30, 2003 06:49 AM ET
GAZA (Reuters) - Two Palestinian militant groups claimed responsibility for a suicide bombing in the Israeli city of Tel Aviv on Wednesday, saying they had worked together to carry out the attack, which killed three Israelis and wounded 55. The military wing of the Islamic group Hamas said in a statement that it carried out the attack with the al-Aqsa Martyrs Brigades, an armed offshoot of Palestinian President Yasser Arafat's Fatah movement, to avenge Israel's killing of a senior Hamas strategist in March.
The bombing at a crowded nightclub clouded the swearing in on Wednesday of Palestinian Prime Minister Mahmoud Abbas, who has signaled his readiness to rein in militant groups as part of a U.S.-led Middle East peace initiative to end 31 months of Palestinian-Israeli violence.
Hamas has opposed Abbas's calls to end "armed chaos" and his criticism of suicide attacks as inimical to the Palestinian goal of an independent state.
In defiance apparently directed at Abbas, the Hamas statement said: "We confirm to those who call for defeat that our resistance will continue and will escalate and our weapons will continue to be directed against the occupier of our land."
Sworn to Israel's destruction, Hamas has spearheaded suicide bombing campaigns during a Palestinian uprising that began in September 2000. Al-Aqsa militant leaders have voiced support for an eventual deal accepting a two-state solution for the two peoples.
In a separate telephone call to Palestinian journalists, a man who described himself as an al-Aqsa member also said the attack was carried out in conjunction with Hamas. He said the bomber came from the West Bank city of Tulkarm.
Israel reoccupied most of the West Bank last year after waves of suicide bombings and other militant attacks.
