TEL AVIV, Israel, May 19 (UPI) -- A British attempted bomber, who fled the scene of an attack near the U.S. Embassy in Tel Aviv when his explosive device malfunctioned, made his way to the sea and drowned, Israel's Forensic Institute said Monday.

Omar Khan Sharif, and his accomplice, also British, Asif Muhamad Hanif, arrived in Israel after spending time in Syria.

The two approached a pub beside the U.S. Embassy, about 1 a.m. April 30. Hanif's bomb exploded, killing two musicians and a French waitress. Sixty people were injured.

Sharif's bomb malfunctioned and he quarreled with Israelis, dumped the bomb, and disappeared. His body was found some 600 yards off shore May 12 but it was difficult to identify it, police said.

The head of the forensic Institute, Yehuda Hiss, told United Press International two British officers arrived with DNA samples that established the man's identity. Hiss said Sharif drowned but it was impossible to determine exactly when.

That attack was the first in which foreigners carried out suicide bombings in Israel. Many details are under wraps and officials would not say whether they saw a link to international Islamic terror groups. The bomb was different than the charges usually used in Israel.

Fearing similar attacks in store Israel tightened security and imposed strict restrictions also on foreigners' travel between Israel and the Gaza Strip. The move affected foreign non-governmental organizations seeking to help Palestinians.
