Despite increased numbers of troops in the area, sectarian cleansing continues. Violence ravages neighborhoods, and troops are under constant fire from Sunni and Shiite extremists. When a battalion from the 1st Infantry Division arrived in March, it replaced a lone U.S. Army company. But even with three times more soldiers patrolling, the violence has worsened. -------------------------------------------- EXCERPT: 1:54 ANNE GARRELS: This was once an area where both Sunnis and Shiites lived together. Militants, many associated with the Mahdi Army of Shiite cleric Moqtada Sadr, have resumed a push to drive Sunnis from their few remaining enclaves here. And the Shiites militias are attacking U.S. forces. They are increasingly using Explosively formed penetrator known as EFP; powerful bombs able to pierce armor.
