Charges Dropped for Briton Ex-Detainee
Friday March 12, 2004 5:46 PM
LONDON (AP) - British prosecutors said Friday they were dropping theft and motor vehicle charges against a Briton released this week after spending two years in U.S. custody at Guantanamo Bay.
The Crown Prosecution Service said pressing charges against Ruhal Ahmed, 23, would not be in the public interest.
``It was decided that if he'd been found guilty he'd have gotten two years and he's already spent two years in prison in Guantanamo Bay,'' a prosecution spokeswoman said on condition of anonymity. ``That (time served) would be taken into account. It would be a waste of procedure, really.''
Ahmed and four other Britons were freed Tuesday from U.S. custody at the naval base in Cuba and flown to London, where they were questioned by Anti-Terrorist branch officers at the high-security Paddington Green station before being released.
Ahmed, from Tipton in central England, was charged in 2001 with theft from a car and driving without insurance or a valid vehicle registration.
Later that year, he traveled to Pakistan and reportedly was detained by U.S. forces in Afghanistan before being sent to Guantanamo Bay.
The U.S. government says the roughly 640 prisoners held at Guantanamo are suspected of having links to Afghanistan's fallen Taliban regime or the al-Qaida terror network.
Families of the five returnees have said they were mistakenly caught up in the U.S. war on terrorism.
Britain and the United States are continuing discussions about the remaining four Britons at Guantanamo. Britain has insisted its nationals either receive fair trials or be returned home.
