Dollar firms after big drop in US jobless claims
Reuters, 05.06.04, 8:42 AM ET

NEW YORK, May 6 (Reuters) - The dollar firmed against the euro on Thursday after the number of Americans filing initial jobless claims dropped steeply in the latest week.

The U.S. Labor Department said first-time claims for state unemployment benefits fell to 315,000 from 340,000 in the week ended May 1. Economists had forecast claims to reach 335,000.

In early morning New York trade, the euro initially slipped to around $1.2104 according to Reuters data, down from $1.2120 shortly prior to the report's release, and down about 0.4 percent on the day.

The weekly jobless data are being closely watched by currency traders ahead of the monthly U.S. non-farm payrolls report on Friday. This report will be viewed as possible confirmation of March's powerful job creation which raised expectations for a Federal Reserve interest rate hike later this year. A Reuters consensus forecast puts April's payrolls increase at 173,000 versus the previous month's 308,000.
