US stocks fell 1.12% Tuesday morning on disappointing economic data

Wall Street fell sharply on Tuesday morning after a disappointing US manufacturing report, stoking expectations the world's biggest economy is not out of its recent sluggish mode.

The Institute for Supply Management's national factory gauge edged up to 49.8 in June from 49.4 in May.

That was well below Wall Street forecasts, which had pegged the figure at 51.0.

A number above 50 signals growth while a figure below that level points to contraction.

US May construction spending meanwhile fell an unexpected 1.7 percent.

The Dow Jones industrial average fell 101.01 points or 1.12 percent to 8,884.43 while the technology-heavy Nasdaq Composite Index gave up 20.99 points or 1.29 percent to 1,601.81.
