Redfield West Nile Victim Speaks Out As of Friday, there have been five confirmed cases of the West Nile virus in South Dakota. That number includes a rural Redfield man who was diagnosed with the virus Wednesday.
Ray McIntyre is a 74 year-old farmer who still heads out to the field daily to work his crops. He never wears bug spray and this time the practice came back to bite him.
"I guess a little bug got me," says McIntyre who started feeling sick two weeks ago, "I lost my appetite right away, I didn't want anything to eat, and I still don't want anything to eat very bad."
He went to the Community Memorial Hospital in Redfield last Sunday with what Dr. Mary Miller calls pretty severe symptoms, "He was not eating well, so we put him on IV fluids to keep him well hydrated. He had a high fever, and headache, and we treated him for pain and fever as well."
It didn't look good for awhile, his temperature was at 102 degrees. But when tests came back Wednesday confirming McIntyre had west Nile, he was already feeling better.
McIntyre's no stranger to a hospital room. He's had a heart bypass and an aortic aneurysm, so he wasn't surprised something else was wrong with him.
But he has an upbeat attitude about his sickness, and says he's a survivor, "We'll get over it sometime or another."
West Nile virus can be fatal, but Dr. Miller says once a patient starts to show signs of getting better, they usually keep improving. And that's the prognosis for Mr. McIntyre.
He could go home as early as Saturday.
