Elderly at greatest risk from West Nile

West Nile virus concerns New Mexico Medical Society President-Elect Kathleen Blake, M.D., especially since the state’s first West Nile death just occurred.

But, Blake stressed, there are common sense precautions to reduce bite risks. She recommends long sleeves and pants legs outdoors to keep mosquitoes from landing on skin, using an insect repellent with DEET, and staying indoors during dawn and dusk when mosquitoes are out in greater numbers.

“And I’m thinking, those are the times that it’s cool enough I can work (outdoors). That’s when I’m out watering my plants,” she said.

Naturally, eliminate all standing water sources where mosquito larvae grow.

“Even a standing cup of coffee, you should not leave that out. It’s a standing pool of water, and if the temperature’s right, the little larvae for the mosquitoes can grow in that water,” she said.

Blake pointed out that the Centers for Disease Control Web site — www.cdc.gov — has an incredible amount of information. On Aug. 21, there were maps, guidelines for clinicians and laboratories, and general consumer data including how to mosquito-proof a home. According to the site, in a section under “Fight the Bite,” there were 4,156 cases nationwide, and the virus was confirmed in 44 states.

Those at “greatest risk,” Blake said, are the elderly.

“We’re going to see more of it because the virus and its infector, which is the mosquito, has been steadily moving into this part of the country,” she said.

A cardiologist, Blake was in Alamogordo on Aug. 20-21, as part of a statewide tour to visit county medical societies.
