The recruit died Sunday hours after he developed pneumonia-like symptoms and a rash, officials at the Marine Corps Recruit Depot said. Preliminary autopsy results indicate Pvt. Miguel Zavala had a bacterial infection that could have been Strep A, base officials said Monday as they awaited more details from the autopsy. The two previous deaths, which came after the victims completed strenuous training exercises, were due to heart and lung conditions – not bacterial infections, officials said Monday. Thousands of recruits were inoculated Sunday following an outbreak of Strep A. Forty-nine recruits and one drill instructor remained hospitalized Monday, said Maj. Kimberly Miller, a base spokeswoman. One recruit was in intensive care. The 72-hour ban on certain activities, including running, swimming and martial arts, is designed "to ensure that anybody who could be sick isn't overtaxed," Miller said. Zavala of Greenfield, Calif., was reporting for a routine medical check, which was required before the inoculation, when he first complained of the rash on his ankle. The rash quickly spread from his ankle to the rest of his body. Pvt. Neal Edwards, 18, of St. Clair, Mo., died of a heart ailment, and Pvt. Samuel J. Bruss, 19, of Kenosha, Wis., died when his lungs filled with fluid, officials said Monday. © 2002 The Associated Press
