Private Miguel Zavala, who had completed 23 training days, went to the Marine Corps Recruit Depot Branch Medical Clinic for treatment of a rash on his left ankle. The rash spread to the rest of his body and Zavala was taken to the Naval Medical Center San Diego, where he died at 1:01 p.m., MCRD spokesman Lt. Mike Friel said. The cause of death is under investigation and pending the results of an autopsy.
