Posted on Fri, Aug. 08, 2003 Bush says Schwarzenegger would be good governor in California By Mercury News Wire Services
President Bush edged into California's turbulent recall campaign today, saying that movie actor Arnold Schwarzenegger would make a good governor.
White House officials have taken pains to stress that Bush will stay out of the recall campaign against Democratic Gov. Gray Davis, and Bush asserted that ``the people of California will sort all this out.''
But he acknowledged that he was closely watching the campaign unfold.
``I think it's interesting,'' Bush said. ``I'm a follower of American politics.''
Schwarzenegger, a Republican, announced Wednesday that he would join the crowded field of candidates hoping to replace Davis.
Bush travels through California for two days next week. White House aides have said it is very unlikely the president will try to promote Schwarzenegger and Bush did not answer when asked whether he will stump for the actor.
But, he said, ``I think he'd be a good governor.'' Bush jokingly said he would not arm-wrestle with the bodybuilder.
Bush wasn't the only member of his administration talking about the Oct. 7 recall election.
Condoleezza Rice, Bush's national security adviser, said she has no plans to run for governor of California.
``It is not on my radar screen to run for elected office,'' Rice told the National Association of Black Journalists convention in Dallas. ``I think I'm going to keep being national security adviser, and I'm going to get my California ballot'' and cast a vote, she said.
Rice, who was provost of Stanford University in California and a senior fellow at the Hoover Institution in Washington before serving in Bush's administration, today wouldn't speculate about her ``long-term'' plans.
``I don't think I'm of the particular breed'' to run for office, she said. ``It's a little difficult for me to imagine doing it.''
