Actor's camp asks hopefuls to quit race, aid GOP unity

A leader in Arnold Schwarzenegger's campaign for governor Sunday urged the remaining high-profile Republicans in the recall election to consider dropping out, a day after conservative Bill Simon pulled the plug on his campaign.

``The message is that I think it's time we be united. That's what we're trying to do,'' said U.S. Rep David Dreier, R-Glendora, a co-chairman of the Schwarzenegger campaign. ``Bill Simon did the courageous thing.''

But the two other big-name Republicans in the race said Sunday they have no plans to quit.

A Los Angeles Times poll released Sunday showed Schwarzenegger getting support from 22 percent of likely voters. Lt. Gov. Cruz Bustamante garnered 35 percent.

The poll found Schwarzenegger, a moderate Republican, 10 percentage points ahead of conservative state Sen. Tom McClintock, R-Thousand Oaks.

Dreier's public appeal fell on deaf ears.

``Tell him to save the phone call, forget it,'' said McClintock, who became the only major GOP conservative in the race after Simon's departure. ``I happen to believe we should have a campaign first and the voters decide who wins.''

Peter Ueberroth, a moderate GOP Orange County businessman, who followed McClintock with 7 percent of the vote, also was not swayed, said his campaign manager Dan Schnur.

``All Republicans want to take advantage of the opportunity here,'' Schnur said. ``But the most important thing right now is to calm down. There are six weeks left before the election.''

Dreier also strongly hinted that Schwarzenegger would not take part in any debates within the next two weeks, including a planned Sept. 3 debate co-sponsored by the Contra Costa Times and KTVU television.
