Activists Depart for Anti-WTO Rally in Mexico
By Na Jeong-ju Staff Reporter A delegation of 40 activists left for Mexico yesterday to join a multinational rally opposing the World Trade Organization (WTO) talks aimed at accelerating the member countries¡¯ signings of free trade pacts by abolishing trade barriers.
``Rich countries will become richer and poor countries will be subject to more starvation under the WTO system,¡¯¡¯ the delegation said in a statement issued at Incheon International Airport.
``We are joining the global network to protest free trade negotiations because they will only serve the interests of some multinational corporations if the pacts are passed.¡¯¡¯
The statement said the 40 members will join thousands of protesters from around the world who will gather at Cancun, Mexico, where the fifth WTO Ministerial Conference will be held from Sept. 10-14 to discuss recent progress in free trade negotiations and other work under the Doha Development Agenda.
``We will make efforts to establish a solid network with worldwide activists to protest the spread of neo-liberalism and WTO policies that speed up inequality among nations,¡¯¡¯ the statement said.
About 180 members from civic groups such as the Korean Confederation of Trade Unions and the Democratic Labor Party are expected to leave the country by tomorrow to take part in the rally, delegation members said.
On Saturday, about 100 people assembled at a park in Seoul to protest the country¡¯s move to sign a free trade agreement with Chile and bilateral trade negotiations with the United States to open more local markets.
The participants urged the government to take an active role in improving WTO policies, claiming the current system will plunge people into a shaky job market and result in severe poverty in underdeveloped and developing countries.
They also released encouraging messages from anti-globalization activists from Costa Rica, the U.S., Indonesia, France and India, urging citizens to join the worldwide move to oppose WTO-envisioned free trade talks.
