It turns out the trade war between Canada and the United States extends beyond softwood lumber — into corn.

The Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) issued a final ruling Wednesday that imports of U.S. grain corn are being dumped and subsidized, confirming a preliminary investigation in December.

Based on its final ruling, the CBSA imposed anti-dumping and countervailing duties of $1.65 bushel (U.S.) on U.S. grain corn imports.

Grain corn from the U.S. accounts for nearly one-fifth of Canada's supply each year. Last year, imports amounted to approximately 85 million bushels, worth about $229-million (Canadian).

Grain corn is used primarily as a livestock feed and as an ingredient in ethanol, corn syrup, starch and other products.

Canadian cattle and hog farmers have complained the move will make it more expensive for them to feed their animals.

Although Canadian corn producers maintain the subsidized U.S. corn has lowered the price they can charge for their crop, industrial corn users say their businesses will suffer because the duties will make American imported corn more expensive.

A hearing is scheduled to begin Monday in Ottawa into whether Canadian corn producers have been negatively affected by the imports. A final decision is expected in mid-April.

Canadian Corn Producers' spokesperson Brian Doidge said despite claims to the contrary by some corn users, the provisional duties put into effect in December have increased the price Canadian producers can charge for their grain corn. He expects a further increase in corn prices now that the levies have been made permanent.
