Plan Recommends Tenn. Get 3,400 New Voting Machines
June 25, 2003

NASHVILLE (AP) -- A new election reform plan recommends that Tennessee get about 3,400 new voting machines.

It's also suggested that $5 million be spent on a statewide voter database and $1 million on educating voters and poll workers.

The plan was drafted by a 15-member advisory committee working with state Election Coordinator Brook Thompson. It is designed to bring Tennessee into compliance with a law enacted by Congress last year in response to the confusion surrounding the 2000 presidential election.

The plan anticipates that the federal government would pay all but $870,000 of the expense.
