How Effective Against Crashes Are D.C.'s Red Light Cameras? Updated: Tuesday, Oct. 4, 2005 - 9:30 AM
WASHINGTON (AP) - D.C. officials contend that the city's red light cameras have reduced crashes, but new figures obtained by The Washington Post seem to contradict that.
The paper's analysis of crashes in the city shows that the number of accidents has gone up at intersections with the cameras, with some showing more crashes than at unmonitored signals. The increase is the same or worse than at traffic lights without the cameras.
City officials attribute the increase to more traffic volume.
Since the District started the camera program in 1999, it has issued more than 500,000 tickets and brought in some $32 million in fines.p>
The Post's figures show that the number of crashes at locations with cameras has more than doubled, from 365 collisions in 1998 to 755 last year. Injury and fatal crashes climbed 81 percent.
Last year the number of traffic fatalities did decrease to 45 from 69 in 2003.
Police Chief Charles Ramsey says the number of accidents would be even higher without the cameras, and he'd like to install them at every traffic light in the city.
