SAN FRANCISCO (Dow Jones) -- With two weeks remaining in the year, Wall Street's busy deal makers have already passed their all-time record for mergers and acquisitions, with more than $3.5 trillion in deals announced.

As of Monday morning, announced global M&A activity topped $3.5 trillion, according to Thomson Financial. That puts the year above the all-time record set in 2000, when about $3.38 trillion in deals were announced.

Big deals have pushed up this year's performance in dollar value. The total number of deals announced this year has reached 34,785, which means the average deal has carried a value of slightly more than $100 million, according to Thomson data.

By contrast, last year saw 33,709 in announced deals totaling about $2.7 trillion -- an average deal size of about $80 million.

2006 year got an early boost from a mammoth deal involving AT&T (T) , which has proposed to buy BellSouth Corp. (BLS) for $67 billion.

However, the bulk of this year's M&A action took place offshore. Of the 10 biggest-value deals of the year, only three involved U.S. companies, according to Thomson data.

The other two largest U.S. deals were private-equity buyouts of Equity Office Properties Trust (EOP) , a real estate investment trust, and hospital operator HCA Inc. Those two deals were worth about $32 billion each.

The largest announced foreign deal, according to Thomson, was German utility E.On AG's (EON) offer to buy Spain's Endesa (ELE) . That bid carried a value of about $34.6 billion.
