U.K. and Italy Reject Purported Bin Laden Tape's Truce Offer
April 15 (Bloomberg) -- The U.K. and Italy today rejected a purported offer by Osama bin Laden for a truce in terrorist actions in Europe.
The offer was contained in an audiotape, purporting to carry the al-Qaeda terrorist network chief's voice, that was aired by the Dubai-based al-Arabiya television channel. The tape was aired a few hours after an Italian hostage in Iraq was shot dead by his abductors.
Italian Foreign Minister Franco Frattini told reporters in Rome that discussing a peace deal with bin Laden would be ``unthinkable.''
Britain's Foreign Office said, ``the right response is to continue to confront terrorism, not give in to its demands,'' according to a statement.
