Thursday, September 16, 2004 Idema's wife says he was abandoned by government
Associated Press
FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. - The wife of a former Green Beret convicted of running a private jail and torturing prisoners in Afghanistan says he was abandoned by the U.S. government and treated unfairly by the Afghan judicial system.
A three-judge panel Wednesday in Kabul, Afghanistan, handed Fayetteville residents Jonathan Keith "Jack" Idema and Brent Bennett 10-year prison sentences, while New York cameraman Ed Caraballo received an eight-year term.
Viktoria Running Wolf, Idema's wife, fought tears shortly after learning about the sentences.
"I don't know how I feel at this moment. I'm kind of numb right now," said Running Wolf.
"I don't know what to believe anymore. I'm going to stand behind what I believe in, and I do believe in my husband."
Idema, a 48-year-old former Green Beret, left for Afghanistan in April with the other two men for what prosecutors said was a freelance war on terrorism.
Kabul police arrested the three July 5, after raiding a house and finding eight Afghan citizens being held in a makeshift jail. All eight said they had been tortured. Three of the captives testified in a Kabul courtroom that they had been beaten, held under water and left without food.
During the initial hearing, Idema said he had the full support of Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld and other American officials. The American and Afghan governments repeatedly disavowed any involvement with Idema.
