The Marines, dressed in civilian garb, were walking home when they got into an argument with a group of gang members near a Chevron gas station at Del Obispo Street and Camino Capistrano about 12:20 a.m., said Lt. Lloyd Downing of the Orange County Sheriff's Department. The gang members left and returned in cars with reinforcements, and some 15 males began attacking the Marines with knives, Downing said. Carter Douglass Caroom, 23, was stabbed seven times in the back and chest, Downing said, and Randall Roach, 22, suffered a stab wound and lacerations. Both men were taken to Mission Hospital Regional Medical Center, where Caroom was listed in critical condition, Downing said. Roach's condition was not immediately known, but he was expected to survive, he said. Steven Brown, 22, and Jason Mack, 27, were able to get away, he said. Investigators from a gang detail unit were tracking down suspects this morning, Downing said. Last Updated: Jul 31, 2003
