Ex-Mossad head urges Israel - free uprising leader JERUSALEM, Sept. 4 — A former head of the Mossad intelligence agency said on Thursday that Israel should release jailed Palestinian uprising leader Marwan Barghouthi to help shore up beleaguered Palestinian Prime Minister Mahmud Abbas.
Israeli forces captured Barghouthi, a leader of Palestinian President Yasser Arafat's Fatah faction, in April 2002. He is standing trial on charges of orchestrating gun ambushes and suicide bombings that killed 26 Israelis. Ephraim Halevy, who headed the Mossad from 1998 until 2002 and resigned as head of Israel's National Security Council in June, told the Haaretz newspaper Israel should abandon its refusal to free Palestinians ''with blood on their hands.'' ''It would be worthwhile also to free Barghouthi... Barghouthi's release could very much help the moderate line of Abu Mazen,'' he said, using Abbas's nom de guerre. ''Barghouthi could be part of a pragmatic Palestinian coalition with which we could work. His release could change attitudes on the Palestinian street.'' Halevy is one of Israel's most respected and experienced experts on security matters. He rarely comments in public but when he does so, his views are widely reported and discussed. Abbas, threatened by a power struggle with Arafat, defended his peace policies on Thursday at a session of the Palestinian parliament in the West Bank city of Ramallah. Israeli prosecutors summed up their case against Barghouthi in a Tel Aviv court on August 24. A defence summation has been scheduled for September 29. Barghouthi has denied complicity in attacks by the Fatah-linked al-Aqsa Martyrs Brigades. Some Israelis regard him as a future partner in dialogue because of his involvement in talks before the Palestinian uprising against Israeli occupation in the West Bank and Gaza Strip began in September 2000.
