On Sunday, legal sources said a plea bargain was taking shape, under which three of the four attempted murder charges would be converted to attempting to cause severe damage. In exchange, Golan would admit to one attempt of murder against Israeli-Arab MK Issam Makhoul (Hadash). Golan's trial began at the Haifa District Court yesterday, following the court's ruling last week that he was psychologically fit to stand trial. Defense attorney Tami Ulman said she intended to appeal this ruling to the Supreme Court, whatever the final verdict of the trial. Golan's alleged terror-related activity included the planting of nine explosive devices in Haifa between 2001-2004, including one at a mosque in the Halisa neighborhood in August 2001, which lightly wounded one woman. The Haifa man also allegedly placed a bomb under Makhoul's car while it was parked near his house. The bomb detonated when Makhoul's wife started the vehicle, but she was unhurt.
