Irish group designated terrorists

Washington, DC, Jul. 13 (UPI) -- The U.S. State Department Tuesday designated an Irish militant group a foreign terrorist organization.

The order, signed by Secretary of State Colin Powell, places the Continuity Irish Republican Army - also know as the Continuity Army Council and Republican Sinn Fein -- on the U.S. list of foreign terrorist outfits.

The State Department now has 38 such groups on that list.

The designation makes it illegal for people in the United States, or those subject to U.S. jurisdiction, to provide material support to such groups. It also requires U.S. financial institutions to block assets and deny U.S. visas to the groups' representatives and members.

The Continuity Irish Republican Army, originally formed as the clandestine armed wing of Republican Sinn Fein, has been active since 1994. Since its inception it has carried out terrorist bombings and shootings primarily in Belfast and the border areas of Northern Ireland.
