U.S. Soldier Being Investigated In Iraq Associated Press March 4, 2004,
TIKRIT, Iraq - An American soldier is being investigated by the U.S. Army after an Iraqi man was killed as troops were trying to detain him, an Army spokeswoman said Thursday.
Military investigators are looking into what role the soldier, a member of the 25th Infantry Division's 1st Battalion, 27th Infantry Regiment, had in the Feb. 27 shooting in al-Huwijah, southwest of Kirkuk.
U.S. Army Maj. Josslyn Aberle told The Associated Press that the Tikrit-based 4th Infantry Division and the Criminal Investigation Division is investigating the incident, which happened during a military operation aimed at arresting suspected terrorists.
The Iraqi killed was apparently resisting arrest before he was shot. It was not immediately clear if he was a suspected terrorist.
The soldier, who has not been identified, has been confined to his barracks at the U.S. Army post in Kirkuk.
The 1st Battalion, 27th Infantry Regiment arrived in Iraq from Schofield Barracks in Hawaii last month to replace the outgoing 173rd Airborne Brigade, which was in charge of security in the Kirkuk.
