US turned down Iraqi deal on eve of war says businessman

THE United States rejected a last-ditch Iraqi deal to avoid war, it was claimed today.

A Lebanese-American businessman said he had conveyed a substantial offer to the US just days before the invasion but he was turned down.

Imad Hage today said Iraq was offering "everything" but the replacement of Saddam Hussein.

Mr Hage said the Iraqis had offered a package of concessions to the US allowing US inspectors to visit Iraq to search for weapons of mass destruction, which he said Saddam did not have.

Iraq was also offering to hold free and fair elections within a specified period of time, concessions to the US in the oil sector and "business dealings" as well as concessions to help the Arab-Israeli peace process.

Mr Hage said Iraq’s deputy head of intelligence, Dr Hassan Obeidi, had visited him in Beirut to say Saddam did not want a confrontation and insisting he did not have weapons of mass destruction.
