US army blunder 'kills eight Iraqi officers'

Friday September 12, 2003

US soldiers mistakenly killed at least eight Iraqi police officers who were chasing a car full of armed men through a checkpoint near Falluja, it was reported today.
According to witnesses cited by the Associated Press, the shooting took place as Falluja police and security guards pursued a white BMW used by suspected highway robbers on the road connecting Baghdad with the Jordanian border.

The Iraqi officers chasing the four men in the BMW were driving pickup trucks. US army troops manning a checkpoint near the village of Saddamiyat al-Falluja opened fire on the BMW and the trucks, apparently mistaking the police for guerrillas.

Witnesses told AP that 11 police officers and all four men in the car were killed in the hail of gunfire. But Reuters quoted police officer Assem Mohammed as saying that the troops killed three of the suspected bandits and eight officers. Six more police were wounded, he said.

"We were chasing a car when the Americans fired at us," Mr Mohammed said from his hospital bed. "They continued firing ... despite our pleas for them to stop and to tell them we are police and security."

In the confusion after the shooting, which was near the Jordanian hospital just outside Falluja, 30 miles west of Baghdad, 12 policemen were taken inside a nearby US base. Whether they had been killed or injured was not clear.

Family members gathered at the base gate waiting for news. Five other policemen with injuries were taken to an Iraqi hospital. Arab satellite television broadcasters were reporting that between 10 and 17 policemen had been killed.

· Also today, a roadside bomb destroyed a US military Humvee jeep near Baghdad, wounding three Americans, witnesses said. The Humvee was reportedly driving in a convoy on a road outside Falluja when the bomb exploded.
