Democrats pounce on Bush over Iraq money

Washington, DC, May. 5 (UPI) -- The Democrats pounced on President George W. Bush Wednesday for requesting an additional $25 billion for U.S. operations in Iraq and Afghanistan.

"Since Bush misled the country on why we needed to go to war, and then misled us on what would happen after the war, it should come as no surprise to anyone that Bush misled the country about how much it would all cost," Democratic National Committee spokesman Jano Cabrera said in advance of the official announcement of the request. "The troops deserve our full support but that does not change the fact that this President has a staggering credibility problem on Iraq."

Citing "recent news reports (that) George W. Bush will ask Congress for an additional $25 billion," the Democrats zinged Bush for what they called "a significant departure from his earlier estimates on what the war would cost and pledge that the first $87 billion supplemental would cover those costs until after the November elections."
