Iraqi police 'shot dead by US'

Iraqi police officers working in Baghdad have accused US soldiers of killing two of their colleagues during a car chase.
The officers, who work at al-Yarmouk police station in the city, told the BBC that a third officer was severely beaten following the incident, which occurred over the weekend.

A coalition spokesman later confirmed that two police officers had been killed during an incident with US forces and said that an investigation has been opened.

The incident comes as a bomb blast left one US soldier dead and two others injured in the town of Baquba, north-east of Baghdad.

'Bad action'

Iraqi police officers told the BBC that two police cars, one unmarked, had been chasing a van when one of their colleagues opened fire to try to make the van stop.

The police said that nearby US troops then opened fire, hitting the unmarked police car and killing one of the officers inside.

Another uniformed officer in the car got out with his hands above his head but the police said he, too, was shot.
The driver of the car said he was kicked and beaten by US soldiers.

The fledgling Iraqi police force has been working alongside coalition forces in an attempt to bring much needed security to the country.

However some police officers said that the incident did little to improve relations between Iraqis and coalition forces.

"It is a very bad action from them and I feel it is very sad for us," police officer Ali Mosleh said.

"I feel it is very difficult to continue working with them if these things continue to happen."

Attacks continue

On Sunday a US soldier from the Fourth Infantry Division was killed by a bomb as he and colleagues were guarding a police station in the town of Baquba, about 70 kilometres (40 miles) from Baghdad.

The killing brings to 57 the number of American soldiers killed in attacks since major combat operations ended on 1 May.

At around the same time as the Baquba attack, two grenades were set off under a couple of lorries close to the UK Government office in Baghdad.

Two Iraqis were injured. A coalition spokesperson said the British office had not been the target and that no staff were injured.

Two people also died over the weekend in the southern city of Basra, when some 2,000 people protested over chronic shortages of fuel and electricity.

Coalition troops came under fire in Basra on Sunday and returned fire.
