Iraq missing 380 tons of explosives
Baghdad, Iraq, Oct. 25 (UPI) -- The Bush administration has acknowledged 380 tons of powerful explosives are missing from a former military installation in Iraq the New York Times reported.
The White House said national security adviser Condoleezza Rice was informed within the past month the explosives were missing from the large facility known as al-Qaqaa, but it was never publicly announced.
Administration officials said Sunday the CIA task force, the Iraq Survey Group that searched for unconventional weapons, has been ordered to investigate the disappearance.
The International Atomic Energy Agency warned about the danger of the explosives stash before the war began last year and after the invasion specifically told U.S. officials about the need to keep the explosives secured, European diplomats told the newspaper.
Administration officials say they can't explain why the explosives were not safeguarded, beyond the fact that the occupation force was overwhelmed by the amount of munitions they found throughout the country.
