The attack on al-Mutanabi Street, on the east bank of the Tigris River, wounded 65 people, and sent plumes of black smoke into the sky, pictures aired by Iraqi state television showed. Book shops were burnt down in the ensuing blaze and cars were destroyed in the blast, the broadcaster said. More than 1,100 U.S. and Iraqi soldiers yesterday moved into Baghdad's Sadr City, a bastion of Iraq's largest Shiite militia, opening a new phase in a security operation aimed at quashing sectarian violence in the city. The Bush administration is deploying 21,500 extra soldiers to stabilize Baghdad and western al-Anbar province and has increased security sweeps. The bomb on al-Mutanabi Street detonated outside a cultural center where people had gathered to discuss politics and literature, Agence France-Presse reported. Iraqis regard the market as one of the literary world's most important centers, AFP said. It was opened in 1932 by King Faisal II and is named after Arab poet Abu Taib al-Mutanabi.
