Baghdad Bombs at Shiite Mosques Kill, Wound Many (Update1)

Feb. 18 (Bloomberg) -- Many people were killed and wounded in two bombings at Shiite mosques in the Iraqi capital of Baghdad, the U.S. military said, without giving precise figures. At least 30 people died, the Associated Press reported.

The first blast occurred during prayers at 12:30 local time, Captain Kelly Lewis said by telephone from Baghdad. A suicide bomber blew himself up inside the al-Khadimain mosque in the Doura district, Lewis said. AP reported that 30 people died citing an unidentified Iraqi National Guard Officer, adding that initial police reports indicated that 13 people were killed and 23 wounded.

The second explosion followed shortly afterward in West Baghdad, Lewis said, adding that he was trying to confirm details. One person died, AP said.

Shiite Muslims are celebrating the Islamic holy month of Muharram and Feb. 19 is Ashura, a day that marks the death of Imam Hussein, grandson of the Prophet Muhammad. Fears of suicide attacks prompted the government last week to announce that it would close the country's borders from Feb. 17 to Feb. 22 for the celebrations. At least 180 people were killed last March in simultaneous attacks on pilgrims in Karbala and Baghdad.

The interim Iraqi government has repeatedly said that supporters of ousted leader Saddam Hussein who lost their status when the Sunni dominated regime fell, and followers of al-Qaeda operatives, are leading Iraq's insurgency and trying to foment religious tensions.

Shiite Coalition

A Shiite coalition won the most seats in the Jan. 30 National Assembly election, in which most Sunnis, who have dominated Iraqi politics since the 1930s, didn't participate.

Separately, a U.S. soldier was killed yesterday and another was wounded by a homemade bomb in the northern town of Tal Afar, the military said today in an e-mailed statement. The military also earlier said a soldier was killed by gunfire yesterday in Mosul, another northern city.
