Two dead as U.S. soldiers fire on Iraqi crowd Last Updated Wed, 18 Jun 2003 7:58:28
BAGHDAD - At least two people died Wednesday when American troops opened fire on a group of protesters in Baghdad. And in a separate incident, one American soldier was killed and another wounded in a drive-by shooting in the capital.
A military spokesperson says the drive-by shooting happened at a gas station and the gunmen escaped.
The military has also confirmed that two people died when troops fired on a crowd gathered outside the main gate of the Republican Palace, Saddam Hussein's former presidential compound and now the headquarters of the American-led administration.
Demonstrators say another person was injured.
The Iraqis were demanding their unpaid wages. They say trouble started when a military vehicle tried to make its way through the crowd.
Shots fired in the air
They say some people banged on the vehicle and a soldier fired into the air to disperse the crowd. That apparently set off a panic and people threw stones at soldiers and reporters.
Witnesses say the soldiers took the wounded man into the compound.
There have been frequent demonstrations outside the presidential palace since coalition forces captured it in early April, mostly over back wages.
Meanwhile, U.S. troops stepped up their search for illegal weapons and Saddam supporters in the capital.
Troops sealed off several streets in a Baghdad neighbourhood early Wednesday and got residents out of their beds while soldiers searched their homes.
The military said they've arrested about 400 people since the operation began on Sunday.
