U.N. bomb probe focuses on Iraqi guards
BAGHDAD, Iraq, Aug. 22 (UPI) -- Iraqi security guards are suspected of helping the suicide bomber that hit the Baghdad U.N. compound.
A senior U.S. official told the New York Times Friday when investigators began questioning the guards, two of them asserted they were entitled to "diplomatic immunity" and refused to cooperate.
"We believe the U.N.'s security was seriously compromised," the official said, adding, "We have serious concerns about the placement of the vehicle" and the timing of the attack.
The bomb exploded directly under the third-floor office of the United Nations coordinator for Iraq, Sergio Vieira de Mello, while he met with a prominent U.S. human rights advocate, Arthur Helton. Both men were killed, along with several aides.
Suspicions have focused on the guards because their links to Saddam Hussein's security service were close. Under the former government, they had to report to the security service once a week on the activities of U.N. personnel, western officials said.
