AIR STRIKES HIT BAGHDAD

More than 40 explosions have been heard around Iraq's capital, Baghdad.

According to reports, one blast was heard near the Information Ministry and US officials claimed to have hit Iraqi state-run television.

Iraq's Satellite TV went off the air at 4.30am local time (1.30am GMT) as explosions rang out in Baghdad. Sky News reporter David Chater said the station was back on air by 7.30am GMT

It was not immediately clear if the domestic television service, Iraq Television, was affected as it does not broadcast overnight. But it began broadcasting versus from the Koran around 9am (6am GMT).

Another 40 explosions were heard around the southern area of the city, where Allied troops are expected to attack from soon.

Sky's Chater, speaking from Baghdad, said: "Most of the night, we've been hearing pounding going on in the western and southern parts of the city.

"This must be to do with the drive of the Coalition troops and the "softening up" of Saddam Hussein's Republican Guard.

"The final battle is beginning to start."

No anti-aircraft fire could be seen and air raid sirens remained silent in the city.

The attacks come as ground fighting intensifies around the country.

Coalition troops are engaging Iraqi forces in fierce fighting in Basra, Najaf and Nasiriyah.
