Philippine Muslim rebel group denies links to Jemaah Islamiyah Thu Oct 17, 5:33 AM ET
MANILA, Philippines - A Philippine Muslim secessionist group Thursday dismissed accusations that it has ties with the al-Qaida-linked Southeast Asian terrorist network Jemaah Islamiyah.
Officials of the Moro Islamic Liberation Front claimed such allegations may be a prelude to efforts to declare it a terrorist group after Washington recently included the Communist Party of the Philippines and its armed wing, the New People's Army, on its list of foreign terrorist organizations.
"That's 100 percent false. The MILF has no need to tie up with any foreign group like what is being reported in the media," Ghadzali Jaafar, MILF vice chairman for political affairs, said in a radio interview.
Singapore has linked the MILF to Jemaah Islamiyah, and media reports have mentioned the MILF as possible trainers of bombers behind the deadly explosions in Bali, Indonesia, last Saturday.
The Philippine military also has cited intelligence reports of alleged collusion among the MILF, the New People's Army and the al-Qaida-linked Abu Sayyaf group.
But Jaafar challenged the government to conduct a joint investigation with the MILF to look into the allegations.
"We do not need to ally with groups whose aims are not clear," MILF spokesman Eid Kabalu told The Associated Press. "What will we get if we link with groups like JI and al-Qaida?"
Philippine President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo (news - web sites) said Wednesday the Bali bomb attacks were connected with a homemade bomb that damaged a Philippine consulate in the central Indonesia city of Manado, also Saturday.
Arroyo said without elaborating that they were linked and probably carried out by Jemaah Islamiyah.
