7 Britons detained in Somalia
11/01/2007 10:17 - (SA)

London - Britain is trying to identify seven alleged Britons detained by Ethiopian forces at the Somali-Kenyan border during an offensive against Somalia's Islamist movement, say reports.

Citing an unnamed government source, the reports said that Ethiopian forces occupying Somalia believed that the British passport holders they claimed to have captured were fighting for the rebel movement, Union of Islamic Courts, or for al-Qaeda.

The source was quoted as saying: "There are seven names, and we're still pressing the Ethiopians for more details, so far without success."

However, the source said that Ethiopia had not passed along any passport numbers or other details to Britain.

Meanwhile, an unidentified civil service counter-terrorism source said Ethiopia had previously claimed to have detained three British passport holders fighting on the side of the Union of Islamic Courts in December, and had forwarded their names to the interior ministry.

The source said that it was unclear whether their identity had been confirmed: "It's highly fluid and we can't get British officials in there to verify."

Ethiopian Prime Minister Meles Zenawi said British and Canadian passport-holders were among the "international terrorists" killed or injured during the offensive.
