French reconaissance team arrives in east Congo
BUNIA, Congo, May 20 — A small team of French soldiers arrived in the eastern Congo town of Bunia on Tuesday to look at the viability of sending an international force to end bloodshed in the region.
Eight French soldiers landed at Bunia's tiny airport on a United Nations cargo plane, and were taken to the headquarters of the U.N. Mission in the Democratic Republic of Congo (MONUC) for a briefing. Militias linked to the rival Hema and Lendu tribes have been battling for supremacy in Bunia since the Ugandan army pulled out in early May. Hundreds of people are thought to have died and tens of thousands have fled their homes in terror. A MONUC force on the ground has neither the mandate nor the manpower to stop the fighting and there is pressure on the U.N. to send in a more effective peacekeeping force. The bodies of two U.N. observers, believed to be a Nigerian and a Jordanian, were found 70 km (45 miles) northwest of Bunia on Sunday. MONUC said they had been savagely killed. France has said it is ready to contribute troops to a multinational force. South Africa has expressed a similar willingness, and on Monday the European Union said it would also consider sending troops. The U.N. Security Council has not yet adopted the resolution which would authorise the force. Congo's war began in 1998 and dragged in numerous foreign armies. Ethnic violence in the east worsened as various militias became embroiled in the fighting. About two million people have died, mostly through hunger and disease. Copyright 2003 Reuters Limited.
