Germany Blames Al Qaeda for Deadly Car Bombing in Kabul
Wednesday, June 11, 2003

BERLIN — A homicide attacker who killed four German soldiers in Afghanistan was a member of Usama bin Laden's Al Qaeda (search) network and also had links to the former Taliban (search) regime, Germany's defense minister said Wednesday.

The German soldiers and at least one Afghan civilian were killed Saturday when an explosives-packed vehicle pulled up alongside a convoy of buses taking the soldiers to the airport to fly home. Another 39 people were wounded.

"It has now been determined that the attackers belonged to the Al Qaeda terror organization," Defense Minister Peter Struck said Wednesday on German television.

The attacker was "financially and logistically supported" by the forces of Gulbuddin Hekmatyar, a warlord opposed to the Afghan government of Prime Minister Hamid Karzai (search), and former Taliban were involved in the preparations, Struck said.

"Those are the three groups that are trying to drive the international protection force out of Afghanistan," he said.

Struck gave no further details on the attacker or the attack's background.

Afghan government officials quickly turned suspicions toward Al Qaeda, Hekmatyar's fighters and former Taliban.
