Opium Extracted From Raw Crop As Prices Soar

PESHAWAR, Pakistan: Apr 30 (PNS) - Farmers in the tribal areas where the government had also been trying to destroy the poppy crop have started extracting opium from raw crops.

The poppy was a major cash crop in the area, the farmers did not want their year-long labour to end up in smoke. “We have not received proper compensation.

Though we cannot resist the government’s anti-poppy drive, yet we do want to get benefit from the existing crops,” a tribal farmer said.

The prices of the opium have soared to an all-time high after the government launched the anti-poppy eradication drive in the area. A number of locals had been arrested from parts of the FATA for violating the ban on poppy-growing, adding dozens of vehicles had also been impounded by the political administration.

Meanwhile, the political administration has intensified poppy eradication campaign in the areas.

“Crops from about 8,000 kanals area, out of 6,000 kanals have been eradicated so far only in South Waziristan Agency,” official sources said, adding “The areas where the political administration has so far not initiated the drive, the masses were collectively working for extracting opium from the crops.” The main buyers of the opium were the Afghans and especially the residents of the Qandahar. “The Afghans buy the opium here and then sold it in the Afghanistan with a high margin of profit.”
