Authorities say rebels killed the police officers Monday after their jeep hit a mine in the Urus-Martan region of Chechnya. The Russian Interior Ministry said Tuesday soldiers in an armored troop carrier rushed to help the policemen, but their vehicle was also blown up by a mine, and eight soldiers were killed in a shoot-out with the rebels. The deadly clashes near the village of Alkhan-Yurt come less than two weeks after Chechnya's pro-Moscow president, Akhmad Kadyrov was killed in a bombing at a public event in the regional capital, Grozny. The breakaway republic has suffered considerable deadly violence in recent years. Some information for this report provided by AFP and Reuters.
