Crime rates, especially violent crime (such as mugging, assault and armed robbery), are extremely low (though not unheard of). The biggest threat is usually pickpockets who practice their skills on unsuspecting tourists. As Egypt is largely a cash economy, criminals know that most tourists will be carrying a larger than normal amount of cash. Travelers are strongly cautioned not to leave valuables such as cash, jewelry, and electronic items unsecured in hotel rooms or unattended in public places. Unescorted women are vulnerable to sexual harassment and verbal abuse.
