The witnesses said about 20 tanks were lined up along the Philadelphi border corridor outside the Rafah refugee camp, on Gaza's southern edge with Egypt, and that troops had fired a shell. There were no immediate reports of casualties. An Israeli military source said the troops had launched a "routine raid for weapons' tunnels." Rafah has been a frequent target for Israeli incursions. Forty-two Palestinians were killed in a massive raid launched in May after militants killed 13 Israeli soldiers in a string of ambushes. © Copyright Reuters 2004.
