Kent State Victims Remembered 33 Years Later
by Carrie Guenther, Ohio News Network

May 4, 2003

33-years ago Sunday, Ohio National Guardsmen opened fire on students at Kent State who were protesting the war in Vietnam.

Four students died and 11 were wounded on May 4, 1970.

The Guard was deployed on campus after protesters burned down a university building.

Guardsmen were only supposed to monitor the protests.

But as students yelled and threw stones at them, the guards fired on the crowd.

Protests at other college campuses around the nation gained strength after the incident.
