Wildlife officers have discovered the whales which stranded on Tasmania's west coast are all female.

The 20 adult sperm whales died on Ocean Beach near Strahan.

The Parks and Wildlife Service says scientists have begun conducting autopsies on the dead whales which are between seven and 10 metres long.

Senior Ranger Chris Arthur says he hopes strong winds will abate so they can conduct an air search of the area to determine whether there are more whales in the pod.

Mr Arthur says it is not unusual for all the dead whales to be female.

"The males travel in bachelor pods or big solitary breeding males and the females travel in either nursery pods or non-breeding pods, so it is quite normal pattern for these animals," Mr Arthur said.
