Yahoo! News Thu, Mar 20, 2003 Stocks Rise; Dow Up 7th Session in Row 2 hours, 46 minutes ago Add Business - Reuters to My Yahoo! NEW YORK (Reuters) - Blue chips rose for a seventh day on Thursday, extending their longest rally since August 2000, as a U.S.-led assault on Iraq (news - web sites) intensified in a war investors hope is quickly resolved for the United States.
Events unfolded swiftly on the first day of a U.S.-led campaign aimed at toppling Saddam Hussein (news - web sites). The United States attacked key targets in Baghdad with cruise missiles, and with its British allies sent advance ground troops into Iraq.
"We're really hostage to the headlines," said Andrew Baker, senior Nasdaq trader at regional investment bank Wedbush Morgan in Los Angeles. Signs an expected full-scale attack has started kept stocks higher during a see-saw session, but Baker also sounded a cautious note.
"It's a very dangerous market. It's a headline emotion- driven market right how, and no one wants to get on the wrong side of a headline."
Stocks fell more than 1 percent early on, but all three major market gauges ended higher. The broad-based Standard & Poor's 500 index rose for a seventh straight day, also its longest streak since August 2000, according to financial markets newsletter MarketHistory.com.
The blue-chip Dow Jones industrial average (^DJI - news) added 21.15 points, or 0.26 percent, to 8,286.60, after skidding almost 135 points earlier and swinging almost 188 points from its low to its high for the day. The Standard and Poor's 500 index (^SPX - news) gained 1.82 points, or 0.21 percent, to 875.84. The tech-laced Nasdaq Composite Index (^IXIC - news) rose 5.69 points, or 0.41 percent, to 1,402.76, based on the latest available data.
