The investigational vaccines, manufactured by Cambridge, Mass.-based Acambis Inc., will be compared with the existing smallpox vaccine, known as Dryvax. SLU officials say the new vaccines were produced using modern methods of cell cultivation. Dryvax, the vaccine provided to all U.S. residents during the period of routine smallpox vaccination, hasn't been produced in many years. No cases of smallpox have been reported in the U.S. since 1949, but the government wants new vaccine developed in case the disease is reintroduced through bioterrorism. SLU principal investigator Sharon Frey said the study will include 90 adult volunteers. Thirty will receive one newly produced smallpox vaccine; 30 will receive the other new vaccine; and 30 will receive Dryvax, though with a different makeup that changes it from the dry state in which it is stored to a liquid state. "The effectiveness of these smallpox vaccines will be measured by observing whether or not a 'pock,' which resembles a blister, forms at the site of the vaccination, and through blood tests," Frey said.
